As a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran, Randy "Duke" Cunningham should be immune from criticism for his past mistakes. Indeed, were it not for the felonious nature of the charges to which he has openly admitted (i.e. His honesty in acknowledging his responsibility for getting caught accepting...consideration...from citizens exercising their first amendment right "...to petition the Government for a redress of grievance...") the Dukester would have to be considered entitled to at least one term in the Oval Office.
He can, and should, join the rest of the morally disabled veterans of filthy politics who are currently hobbling around the West Wing.
I can see him even now, standing up in front of the room with Harriet Miers as she schools the West Wing deviants in the ethics classes the Preznit just ordered:
"No, no, no!! Let's go over this again!!"
"It's not the CRIME, it's the COVERUP!!!"
"It's not a BRIBE, it's helping someone exercise their FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!"
I'm horrified by your attempt to smear a decorated Vietnam vet. Especially one who was so willing to admit to his mistakes, take personal responsibility nad express remorse for his actions.
He did lie, stupid. He lied and lied and lied like all Republicans, and suddenly became "honest" just five minutes before it was all going public anyway.
Murtha didn't lie, he was just smeared by Republicans because they hate the military and they hate America.
He did lie, stupid. He lied and lied and lied like all Republicans, and suddenly became "honest" just five minutes before it was all going public anyway.
But I never said that he didn't lie, stupid.
I asked: "Who died when the Duke lied?" Because if you can't show that someone died when Cunningham lied, then it doesn't count against him. Sorry, that's the rule.
So please stop smearing this decorated Vietnam combat veteran -- particularly since he wasn't responsible for machine-gunning any civilians during the Vietnam war.
NO WONDER you want him in the Oval Office, taking those remedial Ethics classes for the ethically impaired!!
After all, Republican stalwarts like Cunningham, who forget the solemn oath they swore when they became US military officers, and the NEXT solemn oath they swore when they were elected to Congress, NEED to be together with those who have similarly impaired ethics, and memories.
What difference does it make if someone dies? There are too many people anyway. Bush knows that a few thousand young lives is nothing compared to enriching his friends at Halliburton.
Blue88: You're saying that there has been no criticism of decorated Vietnam War veteran Randy "Duke" Cunningham in this thread -- and elsewhere? That does not strike me as an honest assertion.
And, regarding that "Tearful Confession[:]" It takes a big man to admit and regret his failures. I can imagine that those events are seared, seared in Cunningham's brain -- kinda like John Kerry's 1968 Christmas visit to Cambodia.
After he lied and got other Republicans to back him up for months on end in public -- then he confessed. He confessed when it no longer mattered. He confessed right before the videotape rolled condemning him absolutely.
He probably wasn't really injured in combat. I bet he just got a band-aid. Also, he flip-flopped on taking bribes. Flip flopper! Band-aid warrior!
When did Cunningham ever say he was injured in combat?
And just because he denied taking bribes before admitting to taking bribes doesn't make him a flip-flopper. He simply evolved his position over time as learned more about the investigation.
Besides that, he didn't have the same information that the prosecutor had, so he can't be held to the same level of responsibility.
"After all, Republican stalwarts like Cunningham, who forget the solemn oath they swore when they became US military officers, and the NEXT solemn oath they swore when they were elected to Congress, NEED to be together with those who have similarly impaired ethics, and memories." (Blue88)
Utter tripe.
The FACT is that all people are complex and many sided...and virtually ALL politicians are corrupt. That's not a simple blanket indictment, but an observation based on the reality that ALL humans are corruptible to one extent or another.
The least corrupt and most principled politician I can think of is the GREAT Ron Paul (R-TX)...Ok that's one.
Hell, even the likes of the venerated Martin Luther King have "feet of clay," - plagiarist, adulterer, misery profiteer.
The one facet, one's "heroism," or good deeds, does NOT diminish ones vices, nor absolve one of the consequences for them.
Cunningham has admitted his wrong-doing (I won't hold my breath anticipating the same from the rest of the jackals from both Parties to do the same) and has accepted his punishment...WHICH IS COMMENDABLE, precisely because it is so RARE.
Bill Clinton (who never accepted accountability for anything) and his ilk must be laughing at someone naive enough to acknowledge wrong-doing. Clinton's ethics mirrored my own awhile back - "Say nothing, deny everything and demand proof."
Hey! It all too often works.
Cunningham will be punished for his transgressions, but as Barry has pointed out...434 more crooks to go and for anyone who lives in NY, NJ or Conn, you can see by the ethics-free nature of your own local governance, which of the two major Parties is the most ethically challenged (hint, it starts with "D").
Hell no I'm not voting libertarian. I'm gonna sit here and wait for all the damn baby boomers and children of the baby boomers to finally freaking die, so that people with some common sense can finally take over.

Trust in the US Congress died when Duke lied, WF.

I am in perfect agreement with you.

Hate to disagree, WF, but Kerry's a decorated veteran. Does that make him immune from criticism?

I thought that was the rule: Any criticism of a decorated Vietnam War veteran is a smear. Did I get that wrong?
Posted by: withoutfeathers | November 30, 2005 11:10 AM
Sure did, WF.
"Criticism" means one thing, "Tearful Confession" is entirely different.
As if YOU didn't know!!
Heh.

I'm with you, WF.
Cunningham is definitely White House material.
"EVOLVING" those positions every day, just like the current resident, our Preznit, tried to do at the Navel Academy this morning.
Didn't work too well, I fear. Except, of course, with the Mark Levin/Sean Hannity "Great Americans".
Dubya had them at "is".
Heh.
Posted by: Blue88 | November 30, 2005 02:48 PM
I used to think that Bill O'Reilly was the biggest liar alive until I listened to Sean Hannity for about an hour.
Bill O'Reilly is a muzzle loader compared to the machine gun of Sean Hannity's mouth lying. Hannity makes Michael Moore look like an altar boy.
Of course, you have to lie a lot when you are trying to cover for the Bush Administration.
