I have no idea, but the other night (it was rainy), I was driving in White Plains when a car pulled out abruptly in front of me sans lights, forcing me to slam on my brakes. It was a police car.
I don't know why, but I've seen lots of squad cars blow through red lights without their sirens or warning lights. It's NOT simply "because they can," I've been in fire apparatus that were T-boned going through intersections with lights and sirens. I wouldn't want to be in a cop car in that instance...they're a lot lighter.
I'm surprised there aren't more accidents with police cars then there are.

It tends to be "a cop thing."
