Texas leads the way!
The nation's top legal driving speed soon could rise to a long-forbidden 80 mph as Texas moves toward increasing the limit on parts of two interstate highways.
The beginning of a trend, let's hope.

yeah, that'd work real well in New Jersey where people already drive like stupid asses with a 55-65 mph speed limit. Love the tailgaters, the snails, the weavers, the non-signalers, the SUVs, the hot dogs and, most of all, the New Yorkers.

This would be great news if:
a. There were such a thing as a fast lane where drivers were required to move at high speeds.
B. Fuel prices were down to $30.00 a barrell again.
Otherwise it'll be a total wash.

Sounds great to me! although, I used to travel at 80-85 on the NY Thruway, but it just sucks my gas right now as Van said 3 times , that right now it doesn't make economical sense to speed and I have noticed that most drivers albeit for the boy racers, that they are keeping their speed down..
BUT...roll out the $30 barrels!!
Hey Barry? Have you travelled the Auotbahn yet? Now THAT was an experience when I was there in the 80's.

The other big downer about speed is that since over 10 deaths on the NY Thruway just in the last few months, has kinda puit the fuzz out in force near the Newburgh /Harriman section. SUCKS! but it is dangerous to speed around that part....obviously.

Just one more thing before I leave for the Thruway....if the speed limit were to be raised to 80...the normal speed would be 90 or more...I don't think for one minute that they will raise it in NY...maybe NJ?

I think thats an issue that, no matter what your political orientation is, we all agree. The higher the speed limit the better. Unless JMK thinks there is a communist conspiracy behind it :)

Let me get this straight: driving a several thousand pound machine at 80 or 90 or 100 mph--while having to deal with other jerky drivers, idiots on their cellphones, an animal running into the road, a tire blowout, a sudden stop in traffic, etc--is a good thing?
Under ultra-controlled circumstances (or in the middle of Nebraska), perhaps, but in the real world? People should learn how to drive safely within the speed limit before trying to go faster.

OH MAN! I'm gonna get me a driver's license and move to Texas! I've been waiting for this all my life!
YEEEE HAHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Is it hard to learn how to drive? I've lived in the city all my life and never saw much of a need to learn before.

Have I ever mentioned that I kind of like speed? Of course, I wouldn't necessarily want to drive 90+ miles on Route 17, but on nice flat roads? With the windows down? That is my favorite memory of driving in Florida. The wonderfully flat roads. :)

I've hit 100 MPH on the Pulaski Skyway late at night a few times back when I was in college. Clearly one of the dumbest things I've ever done, but it was fun at the time. :)

Not soon enough One in our convoy returning from New Orleans got a ticket for 80 in a 65 (Night time Speed limit on the 10)

Hint: I am a courier...always have a parcel on your passenger seat. When stopped for speeding say, 'I am a courier, officer!! and I am on a ...a...deadline..they told me that I would be fired the next time I am late for a rush delivery( start to cry at this point..(yes guys you can do it, too!)...my job sucks!, and I am just doing what it takes to feed my eleven kids and 17 grandkids....' :)...always works....although I just say that I am soooo stressed from making these 'crazy deadlines'.
At least 6 times stopped for speeding on the Thruway for speeding at 80-87 mph..and just given a warning OR at court whittled down to a NON-poin violation ...saves 4 points each time going over 20mph over the speed limit..( Oil sticker on windscreen IS illegal...apparently ;) )
Just a hint from a person who drives for living.
What? I hear you say? ....it works I swear!

Meaing that I have had several stops for doing over 85mph..and just got a ticket for an illeagl oil sticker...$40.00 fine plus those crazy 'surcharges'...whatsupwivthose..anyway?? instead of a 4 point violation.

AND...be honest. It pays to be honest....sometimes. But in my experience in being stopped quite frequently per year...they appreciate honesty and will work for you..ya know'Do you kow why I stopped you?' ...just say...yeah I was speeding and doing meth...wel leave that last part out...but usually they appreciate honesty..unless it's the end of the month...then lie you ass off. :)

This may serve as an incentive to buy a hummer.
Sure, it'll cost an assload of money. But when you hit me at 100 mph, which of us is going to be ok, in all likelihood?

I've lived in plenty of states that raised the limit. Then everyone goes 10 over. They need to put it 10 under what they really want. In AZ we had more crashes than you could imagine. Then they had choppers clocking speeders from the sky, and cameras that they told everyone about. Everyone knew where the cameras were, slammed on the breaks and got rear ended. Brilliant. I also lived in Texas and some of those folks ain't too bright either. I don't drive much now anyways but I don't get what everyone is in such a damn hurry for. It's called get your ass out of the house sooner and leave yourself some time.
