Headline of the day
Well, that's reassuring... I guess.
POLL: WHITE CANDIDATE HAS RIGHT TO RUN
If you live outside the greater NYC area, you probably have no idea what this is about. Well, the gist of it is this:
The race to fill Rep. Major Owens' 11th District seat has been overshadowed by efforts by some black leaders to oppose the candidacy of Councilman David Yassky, who is white. But a Quinnipiac poll of voters across the city shows that 61 percent don't think Yassky should be discouraged from running just because he is white.
Perhaps it's impolitic to ask too many questions regarding the remaining 39%. Perhaps this is one of those instances in which we should simply process the headline and leave it at that.

That Quinnipiac Poll is pretty astounding, when you think about it.
Consider that whites are about 35% of NYC, so given that you'd expect "tolerant whites" to overwhelmingly (let's say conservatively 80%) support ANY person's right to run in any given district, that's appx 28% of the overall vote, that means that the rest of NYC's voters split roughly 50/50 on that issue.
So much for that vaunted virtue of "tolerance" among other groups.
I'd sure love to see an ethnic breakdown of that poll.
